Town of Rhinebeck Climate Action Planning
Inventory of Government Operations Greenhouse Gas Emissions
In 2023, the Town of Rhinebeck produced an inventory of local government greenhouse gas emissions from the year 2019. This inventory was produced with assistance from the Hudson Valley Regional Council and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.

Climate Action Plan
Based on the results of the Town’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory, the Town has created a draft Municipal Climate Action Plan. The purpose of this plan is to guide Rhinebeck’s sustainable development over the next decade, and provide a path to reduce the Town of Rhinebeck’s emissions to 33% below 2019 levels by 2030, per the CLCPA guidelines. Public input on this plan is essential, please send any comments or suggestions for the draft climate action plan to [email protected].

Climate Action Plan - Adaptation
In February 2024, the Town of Rhinebeck kicked off a 12-month program hosted by the Hudson Valley Regional Council focused on climate vulnerability, adaptation and resilience called CAPI Adapt. As part of this effort, Rhinebeck will produce two deliverables:
1) Climate Vulnerability Assessment
2) Climate Adaptation Chapter This will become a chapter in the Town of Rhinebeck’s broader Climate Action Plan, which is based on the results of the Town of Rhinebeck Local Government Operations Emissions Inventory.
Climate vulnerability planning kicked off with a workshop on February 8th in Peekskill, NY, led by ICLEI, Local Governments for Sustainability. In the workshop a range of regional climate projections were presented and reviewed.
In the coming months, the team will meet with key stakeholders and the public for further input and feedback. Drawing on all of this input, the team will draft a Climate Vulnerability Assessment Report that aims to document the major climate hazards to the City and its most vulnerable assets. The team will then go on to produce a climate adaptation chapter for its Climate Action Plan. This chapter will identify strategies for adapting to the most serious vulnerabilities and analyze and prioritize those strategies.
